Woodbury Gardens

ARCHITECTURAL RENOVATION & ADDITION
GARDEN DESIGN

Set on the open landscape of Virginia’s Northern Neck, Woodbury is an 1850s Greek Gothic Revival farmhouse bordered by fields, mature trees, and long views. Our work strengthened the relationship between the historic home and its surroundings — expanding its living spaces and shaping gardens that feel generous, welcoming, and distinctly tied to place.

A historically-appropriate sun porch and rear porch addition extend the home’s daily life outward. Period details and a paint palette informed by F. Carey Howlett & Associates’ historic analysis ensure the new work sits comfortably within the original architecture. Large windows and quiet transitions create a soft threshold between indoors and out.

The landscape unfolds as a series of outdoor rooms. To the west, a shade garden offers cooler tones and filtered light throughout the afternoon. To the east, the White Garden acts as a morning garden — a granite-lined pond, vine-draped pergola, and layered plantings designed to bloom entirely in white. A mix of heights, textures, and staggered flowering times keeps the palette lively, catching early sun and shifting gently with the seasons.

Across the property, architecture and landscape work in tandem — honoring the home’s history and strengthening the dialogue between house and landscape.
