Flying High in the Fan

We’re excited to share the construction video our contractor, Richmond Rebuilders, created for our Terrace Townhouse project — a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to add a full third floor and roof deck to a historic Fan home. It’s a rare glimpse into the pace, precision, and problem-solving that happens long before the finishes go in.

Situated in one of Richmond’s most beloved historic districts, this townhouse needed more space, better connection, and improved flow — all while preserving the character of the original architecture. The design centered on creating an expanded upper level that feels natural to the home, not like an afterthought. The video walks through that transformation: framing the new floor, reworking the roofline, opening interior sightlines, and preparing for the operable glass wall that anchors the new terrace above the city.

From structural reinforcements tucked behind the walls to the careful rebuild of the mansard form, each step was about future livability — making sure the new volume feels effortless once complete. The result is a home that gains light, breathing room, and a stronger relationship to the outdoors.

Projects like this remind us that design is as much about the construction journey as the final reveal — the choices, coordination, and craftsmanship that carry a vision from the ground up.
